Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council was adjourned without transacting any business with the Opposition keeping up its demand for a discussion on special category status to the State.
Raising the issue through an adjournment motion, Leader of the Opposition C. Ramachandraiah pressed for a discussion saying there was no other important subject than the special category status for Andhra Pradesh. There was no mention of it in the Governor’s address to the joint session on March 7. Other Opposition members including P.J. Chandrasekhar Rao (CPI) too threw their weight behind him, demanding a discussion.
TDP member N.Rajakumari tried to placate the members saying that the issue can be raised during the discussions on motion of thanks to Governor’s address but the members stepped up their protests by displaying placards. Chairman A. Chakrapani adjourned the Council for 15 minutes, after Ms. Rajakumari moved the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address.
When the House met after an hour the Opposition members continued their protests, this time gathering before the Chair holding placards. Legislative Affairs Minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu tried in vain to convince the members for a discussion later. With Opposition members unrelenting the Chairman adjourned the House for the day at 12.30 p.m.
