The Paryavarana Parirakshana Sangham (PPS) has welcomed the government’s decision to withdraw the proposal to establish a thermal power plant at Sompeta in Srikakulam district.

The government on Saturday issued orders, scrapping GO 1107. PPS had started its agitation against the plant in 2009, and three people were killed in police firing on July 14, 2010 at the construction site.

A relay hunger strike had been on for the last six years, demanding the withdrawal of the GO.

The agitators argued that wet lands provided drinking water to several mandals in and around Sompeta. The agitation had attracted the attention.

PPS president Y. Krishna Murthy said the organisation was not opposed to farm-based industries being set up in the land allocated for thermal project.

CPI(M) leaders also hailed the decision, demanding that the government not to go ahead with the Sumitomo project in Polaki.
