Social media activist who posted objectionable Facebook post released

April 22, 2017 12:09 pm | Updated 12:09 pm IST - GUNTUR

After a high drama over the arrest of a social media activist Inturi Ravi Kiran, the Guntur police had dropped him at his home at Shamshabad in Ranga Reddy district in Telangana. The police action has come after Ms. Sujana, wife of Mr. Ravi Kiran, had approached Telangana police seeking whereabouts of her husband.

Mr. Ravi Kiran was arrested from his house in the early hours of Friday by a special team of Guntur police on charges of posting objectionable content against the Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and his son Nara Lokesh on his Facebook page , “Political Punch.”

He was brought to the Assistant Superintendent of Police's office at Thullur and after questioning for several hours, was again dropped at his home. Superintendent of Police, Guntur Rural, K. Narayan Naik said that cases under section 67 of IT Act and 292 IPC have been registered against him.

The police action has come for close scrutiny among the social media circles. Though the Guntur police has remained tight lipped over the exact nature of complaint, it is believed that the decision to release Mr. Ravi Kiran from police custody was taken at a higher level. At one point of time, the whole issue was handled by Eluru DIG Ramakrishna. A senior officer from Guntur Urban Police was asked to take charge of the issue.

The arrest has generated a lot of heat with the opposition party slamming the Andhra Pradesh government for trying to muzzle the voices of people. Party leaders Ambati Rambabu and Mangalagiri MLA Alla Ramakrishna Reddy condemned the arrest.
