The Chittoor police on Thursday nabbed a three-member inter-State gang, consisting of three siblings from Mysore, on the Chittoor-Kanipakam road and seized gold ornaments worth over Rs. 5 lakh and an SUV.
Chittoor II-Town Circle Inspector Suryamohan Rao, said the siblings -- Sivappa (28), Indu (35) and Rani (33) were from Varadaraja Nagar of Mysore city in Karnataka.
The modus operandi of the gang was that the two sisters would travel in inter-State buses posing as passengers and steal valuables and lift bags from unsuspecting passengers. After committing the crime, they would alight at a convenient bus stop.
Their brother would either follow their bus in a car or wait for them at the bus stop as planned. The trio was involved in five cases in Punganur, Chittoor and Tirupati, in addition to cases in Madanapalle division and elsewhere in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
While checking vehicles on the outskirts of Chittoor, the police party stopped Sivappa’s vehicle. Though he tried to flee the spot, they overpowered him. During interrogation, he revealed the whereabouts of his sisters, who were also nabbed from a place close to Chittoor. A case was registered and the trio was remanded to judicial custody.
