All the government schools in Kakinda, Kakinada Rural, Karapa and Samalkot mandals will focus on complete sanitation in the first phase of the ‘Clean Bharat’ programme being implemented in East Godavari district.
The schools will be equipped with drinking water and toilet facilities and for the first time in the State, sanitary napkin vending machines will be installed in the girls’ schools in Kakinada for the benefit of adolescent girls.
Announcing this during a review meeting with the officials of all departments here on Tuesday, Kakinada Member of Parliament Thota Narasimham said that the Union Government was focusing on construction of individual sanitary toilets in households and educational institutions across the country to promote hygiene.
He further said that there was no dearth of funds for the sanitation drive.
Mr. Narasimham wanted the officials of the Education department and Rajiv Vidya Mission to work with close coordination to address problems in government educational institutions.
InfrastructureHe said that focus should be laid on construction of compound walls and individual sanitary toilets in all schools and by August 15 next year, all schools in the district must be equipped with the necessary infrastructure.
Collector Neetu Prasad observed that lack of maintenance was the major problem for the toilets in many schools, as there was shortage of manpower to take up the sanitation works.
She advised the officials of the Education Department to work out the issue with the Municipal authorities.
Zilla Parishad Chairman Namana Rambabu, Additional Joint Collector D. Markandeyulu and others officials were also present on the occasion.
