: Farmers from Nalgonda on Tuesday stalled the survey works of Dummugudem-Nagarjunasagar tail pond project, meant to divert 165 tmcft of water from river Godavari to the Krishna basin.

On receiving information that tail pond survey works were going on at Malkampet of Vemulappally mandal in Nalgonda district, the farmers led by Telangana Matti Manushula Vedkia founder Venepally Panduranga Rao rushed to the spot and obstructed it.

Despite opposition to the project from locals, the State government had issued tenders which were bagged by Gayathri Constructions.

Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Rao claimed that the tail pond project would be a drain on the Telanagana exchequer as it required almost Rs 20,000 crore, besides 19,000 acres of land to dig canals.

He alleged that by giving preference to this project, many ongoing projects meant for Nalgonda and other parts of Telangana were intentionally delayed.

Mr. Rao alleged that the public representatives from Nalgonda district were acting like puppets in the hands of Seemandhra leaders and urged people to vote out such “irresponsible” leaders.
