Despite looking after cleanliness and other important aspects of a city, municipal workers remain unsung heroes.

In a bid to recognise their work and establish a rapport with people, officials of the Municipal Corporation of Tirupati organised a special drive under the Swachh Bharat campaign, highlighting the contribution of the workers here on Thursday.

Interacting with the media during the inaugural of the programme in Bairagipatteda area here, MLA M. Suguna urged the people to establish a bond of friendship with the workers as they keep the surroundings clean and contribute to the wellbeing of society.

“Without them, the entire city would be in a chaos. We should also extend our cooperation by keeping our surroundings clean,” she said.

Special drive

MCT Additional Commissioner M. Sridevi said that the special drive, which began on July 16, would continue up to July 31.

“The drive aims at spreading awareness on the work done by the municipal workers and recognising their efforts to keep the town/city clean,” she added.

As a token of appreciation, people had been urged to tie friendship bands to the workers.

Later, Ms. Suguna and other officials distributed safety equipment such as gloves and face masks, and said that special medical camps would be conducted for the municipal workers.

MCT Secretary (Sanitation) B.S. Balaswamy was present.
