The recent outbreak of dengue in Varadaiahpalem mandal of Chittoor district was attributed to the prevalence of open wells and profusion of mosquito breeding sites in the area.
Health officials, who conducted a free medical camp at Battalavallam village, identified rains, which in turn had created several breeding sites for mosquitoes, as the root cause of the outbreak of the disease.
The officials found 23 open wells, some of them even without compound walls, with stagnant water.
300 examined
Other areas that were inundated also transformed into breeding sites resulting in the outbreak of dengue and subsequent spread to other villages and mandals.
More than 300 patients were examined at the medical camp and were given the necessary medicines.
Precautions
The officials elucidated on the precautions to be taken and educated the residents on various aspects such as elimination of mosquito breeding sites, utilising clean water for drinking purpose, personal protection against mosquito-bite — repellents, nets, and proper dressing.
District Medical and Health Officer (In charge) C. Aruna Sulochana Devi, District Coordinator of Hospital Services Saralamma, Indian Medical Association (Tirupati) president K.H.
