Rain subsides, flood toll rises to 43

Heavy rain subsided in Coastal Andhra and other regions of the State on Thursday, while the toll on account the recent floods rose to 43 with more deaths being reported from West Godavari district.

The break-up is West Godavari 10; East Godavari 9; Vizianagaram 5; Srikakulam Khammam, Prakasam, each 4; Guntur 3; and Krisna, Nellore, Anantapur and Kurnool each one.

Clear skies

Many places in the North Coastal region reported clear sky for the day with Tekkali being the only place which received the rainfall (3 cm).

Kiran writes to Manmohan

Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy addressed a formal letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh requesting him to depute a Central team to the rain-ravaged areas to make assessment of the damage to crops and properties and recommend assistance to reimburse the expenditure being made by the State out of its own sources for rehabilitation and restoration.

A Disaster Management official said the team was likely to arrive in after a fortnight comprising officials from various departments, including Agriculture, Home etc.

Vinod Kumar Ekbote, Additional Commissioner, Disaster Management, said over 270 relief camps were still being maintained in the affected areas where the number of people accommodated was 1.5 lakh.
