After enduring many hot and dry days, the city residents woke up to a pleasant day on Saturday, when it began to rain since early in the morning, and continued sporadically throughout the day.
On the flip side, the test cricket match between New Zealand and India that was to happen at Uppal Stadium on Saturday was cancelled due to rain, disappointing many cricket fans in the city.
Clouds loomed over the horizon since about 6.30 a.m., and soon it began to drizzle in many parts of the city. In an hour, the drizzle developed into copious downpour, drenching the water-starved city for nearly half-an-hour.
After a gap during which the sun appeared for a brief while, the showers returned again in the afternoon at around 2.30 p.m.
This time, the rain lasted for a full hour in quite a few parts of the city, resulting in water logging at a few places and traffic chaos.
Water logging was reported from areas such as Kishanbagh, Bahadurpura, Chandrayangutta, and Begumpet. Evening traffic moved very slowly on main arterial roads.
Weathermen described the rain as ‘heavy passing showers’ occurring over a large expanse due to formation of low pressure area in North East India. At 5.30 p.m., the rainfall recorded in the city was 3 centimetres, they informed, and predicted rain for one more day.
