BJP National Mahila Morcha in charge D. Purandeswari on Wednesday demanded an impartial probe into the boat tragedy at Pavitra Sangamam in Vijayawada that left 21 dead.

Talking to reporters after calling on some of the members of the bereaved families here along with, among others, BJP district president P.V. Krishna Reddy, she said the incident was “very unfortunate.”

She noted that 68-year-old Seetramaiah, who earned a name at the Jayaram Theatre centre by treating poor patients free of cost, died along with his wife, but their six-year-old granddaughter survived the accident.

There were several lapses and, according to reports, relatives of some Ministers and officials were involved in the business of ferrying tourists without adequate safety measures, she observed.

There was a need for fixing responsibility, she said. Deterrent action should be taken against them in order to prevent recurrence of such mishaps.

The government would render justice to the surviving members only by taking deterrent action against the guilty, she opined.

Judicial probe sought

Staff Reporter in Vijayawada writes:

CPI leaders and activists staged a demonstration at the Berm Park on Wednesday and demanded that the government punish the culprits behind the tragedy.

Donepudi Shankar alleged that all the illegal boats being operated in the Krishna belong to the benamis of two Ministers.

“The NHRC should take up the case suo motu . The Chief Minister should order a judicial probe,” he said.
