July 16, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:58 am IST - CHINTURU (East Godavari):

Police averted a major disaster by defusing three landmines planted by Maoists near Yedugurrallapalli village on Friday morning.

Two were planted long ago and the intention is to target police personnel, it is said. The Maoists pasted posters in the village on Thursday night inviting the attention of the police to the Martyrs Week to be observed from July 28.

“We have successfully defused the landmines without causing harm to anybody,” said East Godavari Superintendent of Police S. Raviprakash.

Meanwhile, police recovered pamphlets in Hindi from the site. OSD Phakeerappa and ASP Swati along with Greyhounds personnel cordoned off the area.

Traffic between Chinturu and Maredumilli was stopped for three hours.
