Police caning candidate triggers tension

March 31, 2014 12:15 am | Updated May 19, 2016 12:42 pm IST - KHAMMAM:

Commotion prevailed at a polling booth during the municipal elections in Madhira Nagara Panchayat when a police officer allegedly caned a candidate contesting from 15th ward in the mandal headquarters town on Sunday.

The incident triggered mild tension in the area in Madhira town for some time.

Sources said a police officer allegedly caned CPI local leader B. Ravi Babu, a candidate in fray from 15th ward on behalf of the CPI-Congress combine, while he was speaking to a person in front of the government hospital close to the polling booth.

Angered by the incident, Mr. Ravi along with local CPI and Congress cadres approached the Wyra DSP, B. Sai Sri, seeking action against the police officer responsible for the alleged lathi-charge.

The CPI activists alleged that the police officer resorted to lathi-charge without any provocation from the leader.

However, the police officials concerned refuted the charges.

They maintained that the candidate violated the rules in force and engaged in a conversation with a “non-voter” in the vicinity of the polling booth.
