Proceedings in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly were stalled for 25 minutes on Saturday as the YSRCP members insisted on Speaker Kodela Sivaprasad Rao allowing discussion on an adjournment notice given by them on problems of contract workers. The Speaker disallowed the notice and asked the Opposition members to raise the issue in some other form. As the YSRC members trooped into the well of the House disrupting the proceedings, the Speaker adjourned the House for half an hour.

Trouble started as soon as the House met for the day with G. Srikant Reddy (YSRC) demanding a statement from the Minister on the issue. The Speaker said the matter was serious but there was no emergency. He asked the members to follow conventions and not dictate to the Chair. Legislative Affairs Minister Y. Ramkrishnadu asked the Opposition members to give a proper notice on the issue. Government was prepared to reply, he said.

Labour Minister Atchan Naidu said government had set up a sub-committee to look into the contract workers issue. He charged the YSR government of giving jobs on contract basis to certain persons in the last 10 years and now the Opposition want them regularised.

Leader of the Opposition Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy said a lot of contract and Anganwadi workers were hoping to get permanent jobs believing the TDP slogan of ‘Babu is coming and jobs will come’.
