One of the most wanted fugitives, Yellam Goud, was finally arrested by the Cyberabad police and a 7.65 mm calibre country-made pistol with four live rounds, Maruti Swift Dzire car and counterfeit currency having face value of Rs. 69,100 were seized from him, Cyberabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand said at a press conference here on Tuesday.

Goud, accused of committing a series of offences like robberies and attempts to murder in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, had been absconding since he and his associates killed a constable, Eshwar Rao, at Shamirpet on August 1.

Constable Rao was a member of the police decoy party that had contacted Goud’s associates who were involved in circulation of fake currency notes. Led by SI Venkat Reddy, the police team met the gang and detained two of its members after seizing counterfeit currency notes with face value of Rs. 1.5 lakh. “Through the detained persons, the police contacted Goud and his associates claiming that they were engineering students and wanted to buy fake currency notes,” Mr. Anand said.

With his accomplices Mustafa and Srikanth, Goud arrived to meet the ‘engineering students’. Realising that they were policemen, the gang attacked constable Eshwar Rao and SI Venkat Reddy with knives inflicting multiple wounds on them. In the scuffle, one of the gang members, Mustafa, died on the spot while the constable succumbed to injuries later in the hospital.

Thirty two-year-old Goud hailing from Imambad near Siddipet of Medak district worked as a driver of three-wheelers and cars for many years before opening a roadside eatery which ran into losses. He committed his first offence – robbing a couple in Vemulawada of Karimnagar district – joining hands with two of his friends in 2007.

The next year, the gang robbed three more persons in Balanagar of Cyberabad and were arrested by the local police. Later, Goud and his accomplices committed three dacoities in Karnataka where they were eventually arrested. He met Mustafa, who used to make fake currency notes using colour photo-copying machine, and started circulating the same.
