OGH blackout due to internal faults: CPDCL

After two successive days of power outages at the Osmania General Hospital recently, the Central Power Distribution Company (APCPDCL) on Saturday issued to the hospital’s Superintendent instructions to avoid future power failures.

In a letter on May 7, the Superintendent Engineer, South Circle of CPDCL, noted that the power failures on May 5 and 6 occurred due to internal faults and “maloperations” by the hospital’s electrical maintenance department without prior intimation to the discom engineers.

He notified that the tripping of 11KV feeder to the OGH caused damage to the discom’s equipment at the 33KV substation.

List of instructions

The list of instructions included carrying out regular maintenance of all electrical equipment as per schedule, replacement of the failed power transformer in the AC panel, circuit-breaker, failed distribution transformer and damaged LT cables, upkeep of generator and change-over switch for emergencies, availability of maintenance staff in all three shifts in a control room with phone facility.

The list also included removal of all old equipment in and around control room and at service point, clubbing of the two existing HT services, and avoiding extension of supply from one service to the other.
