No intention to close down government schools: Ganta

‘Rationalisation is only to improve quality of education’

HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao has reiterated that the Government has no intention of closing down government schools and that the rationalisation process is only for improving the quality of education in the schools.

The Minister, who released the results of the entrance test conducted by the AP Residential Educational Institutions’ Society for admission into 50 residential schools (with 4,000 seats) and 10 junior residential colleges (1,425 seats) and two degree colleges ( 432 seats) here on Tuesday, said that the Government was bringing out several reforms for the development of the education sector. In line with the government’s objective, a meeting was being organised here on May 28 for providing basic amenities in schools, he said at a media conference. The State government proposed several measures to make the education sector the best in the country, and accordingly it allocated Rs.21,000 crore for it in the financial year 2016-17, he said.

Mr. Srinivasa Rao said that vacant posts were being filled and no shortcomings would be allowed in teaching and provision of basic facilities.

Praising the performance of residential schools, he said the APREIS institutions were leading in taking thousands of students to higher position. For 3,904 seats in 50 residential schools, 23,609 students appeared for the entrance test and 90.54 per cent of them qualified in the test .

NEET issue

Asked about the NEET ordinance, the Minister said that next year all students would be prepared for it. He welcomed the President’s assent to the ordinance. He said the ordinance became possible after Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu held a review meeting on NEET and with the intervention of Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and M. Venkaiah Naidu.
