Senior Congress leader T. Subbarami Reddy is most likely to be the party candidate for by-election to the Nellore Lok Sabha constituency, party sources said here on Thursday.
The Congress high command is reported to have already finalised his name as it is unwilling to take chances in the wake of reverses suffered in the recent Kovur assembly by-poll. Although he was initially unwilling, Mr. Reddy is also stated to have agreed to enter the fray to take on the challenge of the YSR Congress party..
Though party leaders do not openly confirm this, the visit of TSR Lalitha Kala Parishat general secretary D. Varada Reddy here is seen as a strong indication of finalisation of Mr. Subbirami Reddy's candidature for the by-poll. Mr. Varada Reddy addressed a press conference here on Thursday where he refused to talk about by-election but merely announced details about the proposed construction of Rs. 10-crore TSR auditorium in Nellore.
He said: “it is true Mr. Subbarami Reddy's name is being considered by the leadership. Other than this, we don't have any more information as of now. Our visit is only concerned with the auditorium project here.”
The TSR Lalitha Kala Parishat is planning to organise a major event here on May 6 to mark the foundation stone laying ceremony for the auditorium. TSR is roping in many political stalwarts and film personalities for this event.
Though Nellore Rural MLA Anam Vivekananda Reddy has sought the Congress ticket, the leadership is said to have not considered his request. Even his brother and Finance Minister Anam Vivekananda Reddy is stated to have preferred TSR's candidature.
