Continuing the great cultural tradition, a 32-ft ‘Narakasura’ effigy stuffed with a variety of crackers was set ablaze to mark the annihilation of the demon king by of Lord Krishna, as part of Deepavali celebrations in the wee hours of Wednesday.
All roads in Ongole led to the C.V.N. Reading Room Centre to witness re-enactment of the attack of Narakasura, the son of mother earth by Lord Krishna mounted on his celestial vehicle Gardua along with his consort Satyabhama, culminating in torching of the giant effigy of the demon king.
Revellers from far and near thronged the busy area to witness the cultural event organised by the Ongole Friends Club for the fourth year in succession. Students dressed like Lord Krishna, his consort Satyabhama and Narakasura hogged the limelight.
Meanwhile, a group of artistes dressed like the demon king and Lord Krishna along with Satyabhama came in two tastefully-decorated chariots from the Kothapatnam Bus Stand Centre to the Gandhi Road. The thespians rendered ‘padyalu’ in a lively manner on the fiercely fought battle leading to killing of the demon king by Lord Krishna with his Sudarshana Chakra (disc) and won a big round of applause. Before dying, the Asura sought a boon from Lord Krishna that his death anniversary should be celebrated by all people on earth. “We hold the celebrations to remember the big event,” said Ongole Friends Club President Tata Badrinath.
