Noted Oriya writer Manoj Das was presented the NTR National Literary Award on Tuesday, coinciding with the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister and Telugu Desam founder Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao.

Dr. Das was selected for the award, which carries a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh and citation, by the jury of NTR Vignana Trust, headed by its chairperson N. Lakshmi Parvati. The award recognises his contribution to literature, both in Odiya and English.

Penning his first novel at the age of 14, Dr. Das was conferred several awards, including Padma Sri, and his stories figured in the compilation of best literary works released in the US.

Presenting the award, Ms. Parvati said the award was instituted in memory of the actor-turned-politician who made a mark for his struggle to protect Telugu pride.

Jnanpeeth award winner Dr. C. Narayana Reddy recalled his association with the late NTR, the legendary actor, who portrayed the roles of hero and villain in the same frame with unparalleled ease.

Retired IAS officer K.V. Ramana hoped that the trust would continue to select reputed writers of different languages.
