The Lotus Temple belonging to International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) is getting a facelift ahead of Sri Krishna Janmashtami, which falls this year on September 5.
The sprawling temple complex, also known as ‘Radha Govinda Mandir’, will celebrate the appearance day of Lord Krishna from September 4 to 6.
The first day will be dedicated to distribution of prizes to winners of various competitions held recently. On September 5 (Saturday), ‘Utlotsavam’ will be conducted at 4 p.m., in which local youth try to grab the ‘Dahi handi’. ‘Maha Shankhabhishekam’ will be performed to the deities of Radha and Govinda at 11 p.m., which will be the major highlight. “As the third day marks the 119th appearance day of Srila Prabhupada, founder of the ISKCON order, Sunday (September 6) marks conduct of bhajans and a programme called ‘Srila Prabhupada Leelamritam’ to offer tributes to him,” said Revathi Raman Das, president of ISKCON Tirupati at a media conference here on Wednesday. This temple is one of the few in the ISKCON circuit to have the deities of Radha and Krishna along with ‘Ashtasakhis’ (eight companions) at the main altar and hence Tirumala-bound devotees make it a point to offer prayers at this shrine during their pilgrimage.
The temple and the road leading to it are being tastefully decorated with rich flowers of various hues. Colourful dioramas of mythological episodes are coming up in the vicinity to narrate the interesting sequences to children. Similarly, the adjoining playground is also being readied for the festivities and cultural programmes.
