The private member bill moved by Congress MP K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao will come up for discussion in the Rajya Sabha on Friday even as the suspense over voting on it continues.

The bill has been included in the Upper House’s private members’ legislative business list to be taken up at 2.30 pm on Friday. The Congress leadership has issued a whip to its members to be present in the House during the debate on the bill.

Dr. Rao tabled the bill on March 11 seeking an amendment to the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014 paving the way for grant of special category status to the State so that it gets level playing field with the neighbouring States like Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

The people of the State were eagerly waiting for the special category status that would ensure accelerated development, but the Centre was dilly dallying on it, he alleged.

Dr. Rao told The Hindu from New Delhi that he would not withdraw the Bill and would insist on voting on it. “I will press for voting and there is no question of going back.” The Telugu Desam Party too has announced its resolve to support the Bill in the larger interests of the State.

I will not withdraw the Bill and will insist on voting on it
