Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta (60) on Tuesday took oath as Chief Justice of the High Court of A.P. at an impressive function in the Raj Bhavan here on Tuesday.

A.P. Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan administered the oath at a brief ceremony, in the presence of Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy.

Justice Sengupta began his legal journey as a lawyer and practiced civil, criminal and constitutional law at the Calcutta High Court.

Following the assent of President Pranab Mukherjee, the Centre on Friday notified the appointment of the new Chief Justice. Based on the notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice (Department of Justice), the A.P State government issued orders on Saturday.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by Clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta, Judge of the Uttarakhand High Court, to be the Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office,” the Andhra Pradesh Government Order said.
