For a long time, home-grown rock and metal bands had it hard, as far as opportunities to perform were concerned.
With ‘ganamela’ ruling the roost, they had to be content with playing ‘free’ gigs for acquaintances or compete in band competitions as part of college cultural festivals or worse, even play film songs at weddings to survive.
Of late though, some doors have opened, as is evident in the increasing number of rock and metal gigs across the country.
Now, bands have started crossing the borders too and playing at international music festivals.
The Down Troddence (TDT), the Bangalore-based metal band formed by a group hailing from Kannur, is the latest to join these select set of bands.
They are set to play in Egypt later this month and will perhaps be the first of the Indian bands to play in that region. In the same tour, they are also expected to play in Israel, through this is unconfirmed as of yet.
In Cairo, they will headline the Middle East finals of the Wacken Metal Battle, the stepping stone to the legendary Wacken open-air metal festival.
