After nearly two years since the construction works of the Low Height Subway (LHS) at Kankaragunta, the facility is all set to be opened for public in the May first week. The project was undertaken to ease the traffic congestion at the Brodiepet railway level crossing.

The subway will connect the areas in Brodiepet and Lakshmipuram with Nallacheruvu, R. Agraharam and AT Agraharam. With the opening of the LHS, the existing level crossing gate at Brodiepet would be closed down.

With the project running into many roadblocks, MLA M. Venugopala Reddy had suggested the GMC and Railway authorities to change the design and an approach road was laid towards the Jute Mill Road. Now, commuters from Brodiepet have to reach the approach road and take a U-turn to reach the LHS. People heading towards Jute Mill can take the straight way.

Superintendent Engineer, GMC, Marianna, said that the finishing works pertaining to the retaining wall, approach road and flooring were being completed.

The GMC had proposed to the LHS involving an expenditure of Rs.12.6 crore in 2012, to end travails of those commuting from Brodiepet to the Collectorate junction. In March 2013, the Guntur Division of South Central Railway completed the task of entrenching 24 concrete slabs under the railway tracks. The GMC then completed the laying of approach roads from A.T Agraharam side and other ancillary works like drains, diversions on which Rs.3.9 crore was spent.
