Life in school is one of the most cherished moments in life. The joy of learning, playing and experiencing different cultures is possible only in a school. But happy schooling remains a dream for most children having to study in State-run schools in rural area beset with lack of basic amenities.

It was this dream that prompted Ravi Vadlamani, past district governor of Rotary International District 3150, to launch an ambitious project “Raise hand to save our schools,’’ to convert schools without basic amenities into ‘Happy Schools’.

“I have set a target of distributing one lakh school desks to government schools and aided schools without support. Each ‘Happy School’ will have a painted and well-maintained school building, separate toilets for boys and girls, play material and study material. We will also train the teachers,’’ said Dr. Vadlamani.

On Thursday, the Rotary Foundation with support from RI District 5950 and Rotary Club of Minneapolis, U.S., distributed 2,625 school desks at Oxford High School, Parchuru.

Dr. Ravi said on Friday that that the dream project supported by many countries had been a major change agent across government-run schools in rural areas fulfilling the universal goal of educating every child.

RI district governor Anna Ratna Prabhakar said that providing school desks had been instrumental in providing access to quality education in rural areas. Many government schools continued to languish without basic amenities.
