“It will take a thousand years to complete Polavaram project at the current rate of allocation of Rs.100 crore per annum,” Lok Satta Party national president Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan has said. He also demanded that the Centre assist the State as promised in the Andhra Pradesh State Reorganisation Act.
‘Sankalpa Deeksha’
Speaking at Anantapur during the one-day ‘Sankalpa Deeksha’, he said: “People’s opinion didn’t count when the State was being bifurcated, as all major political parties - BJP, Congress and TDP - had supported the process at one stage or the other, and now their travails don’t seem to count for anything.”
He added that the Union government was obliged to implement all provisions of the Andhra Pradesh State Reorganisation Act in letter and spirit. He said the LSP was the only party that had suggested special category status for the State, besides a provision for the Centre to chip in and address its revenue loss.
He added that when bifurcation seemed imminent, all political parties were playing to the gallery.
Special category status
Mr. Narayan argued that unless the ‘special category status’ was given to the State, industries would not come up, as the neighbouring states were on par and better placed at providing facilities to industries.
People’s opinion didn’t count when the State being bifurcated, as all major political parties had supported the process at one stage or the other, and now their travails don’t seem to count for anything.
