International smuggler among seven convicted

International red sanders smuggler Fayaz Shariff, 40, and six other smugglers were sentenced to undergo three-year imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs. 10,000 by the Judicial First Class Magistrate of Pulivendula, Srinivasa Naik, on Monday.

Stating that it was the first-ever case of conviction of an international red sanders smuggler, Kadapa Superintendent of Police P.H.D. Ramakrishna said Fayaz Shariff, a native of Katiganahalli in Karnataka, an accused in 83 cases, including 45 cases in Kadapa district and 38 cases in Chittoor district, was arrested by the Kadapa police in October last.

Six other red sanders smugglers of Vempalle -- Yemineni Krishna Reddy, Chinnanagireddy Sridevi, Boreddy Ramakrishna Reddy, Kathireddy Kesava Reddy, Srinivasulu Reddy, and Udumu Srinivasulu -- were also convicted, the SP said.

Pulivendula ASP Anbu Rajan, OSD (operations) B. Satya Yesubabu, prosecutor Srikanth, Pulivendula Circle-Inspector Maheswar Reddy, Sub-Inspectors Syed Hasan and Madhu Malleswara Reddy and court constable K. Srinivasulu Reddy would be rewarded, the SP added.
