Police on Monday registered a case against a man and his six family members on charges of burning his daughter-in-law alive at Devasanipalle village of Puttur mandal.

The victim, Devayani (42), and her husband Vasu, an auto-rickshaw driver, were living separately in the same village after a tiff with the family. On Sunday morning, the woman went into her in-law’s house to get some clothes of her mother-in-law, who died three months ago, as she needed them for performing a ritual.

Soon after she entered the house, her father-in-law, along with his two sons, their wives and two daughters entered into a heated argument with Devayani. The family members allegedly manhandled Devyani in the process. Dharma Reddy then allegedly poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.

With 90 per cent of burns, Devyani was rushed to the SVRR Hospital in Tirupati. She succumbed to her burns on Monday morning. According to Police, based on the statement of the deceased and her husband’s complaint, a murder case was registered against Dharma Reddy and six others.
