Heavy rain lashed the city and its surroundings as the southwest monsoon turned vigorous on Monday.

People living in the low-lying areas in the city, particularly in the colonies on the city outskirts, had a tough time venturing out of their houses as the downpour left the roads inundated with flood water.

The city received 8 mm rainfall till afternoon.

The wet spell dampened the Dasara festivities organised in the sprawling PVRMB high school grounds which resembled a pool with water everywhere.

Meanwhile, weather officials predicted heavy to very heavy rain in the next 48 hours in view of the interaction of circulations in the Bay, including the one from the South, with the withdrawing monsoon from the northwest.

It was a testing time for motorists’ driving skills as they encountered several potholes filled with water on the roads.

Farmers happy

However, the persistent wet spell brought cheers to the farmers in the district, who had to miss paddy cultivation altogether and go for irrigated dry crops in the Nagarjunasagar command area due to poor storage in the Nagarjunasagar project even as the end of the monsoon period fast approached.

Meanwhile, agriculture department officials said the rain god had so far been kind to the drought-prone district.

Going by present trend, farmers would be able to grow crops in over 2.28 lakh hectares during the kharif season.

Worst-hit areas

The people living in the waterlogged Pragati Colony, Kesarajukunta, Sriram Colony, Ashokanagar, Jashuva Colony, Surendra Reddynagar, Kothadonka, Indiramma Colony, Rajiv Griha Kalpa Colony and the Mother Theresa Colony were among the worst-hit.

Komarole received a maximum rainfall of 11 mm followed by Racherla (10 mm), Giddalur (6.4 mm), Gudluru (6 mm) and Singarayakonda in the last 24 hours, Chief Planning Officer K.T. Venkaiah said.
