With erosion of the sea coast posing a constant threat, Green India have taken up the task of forming a Green Wall with the help of palm trees (thati chettu in local parlance) in Nellore, Prakasam and Guntur districts.
A large scale plantation drive of palmyra seed was launched under the project along the coast at Ramatheertham in Nellore district here on Saturday.
Green India volunteers, along with the local environmental activists, undertook the plantations.
The organisers were targeting to plant nearly 18 lakh seeds with an aim to save the coastal areas during natural calamities such as cyclones and tsunamis.
Participating in the drive, Green India chairman Ch. Murali Krishna said such massive plantations would help prevent coastal erosion and protect environment along the coast.
He appealed to all sections of society to take part in the environmental protection drive and make the ‘Green Wall’ project a big success.
