CPI(ML) New Democracy leader Tandra Prakash has accused the government of turning Srikakulam into an “experiment centre” for thermal projects by inviting companies to set up projects in the district despite strong opposition from people.
Speaking at a function organised to mark the death anniversary of freedom fighter Veera Gunnamma at the Srikakulam Press Club on Wednesday, Mr. Prakash said more thermal projects were being planned in the coastal belt, apart from Ponduru and Etcherla, in the guise of development.
He added that those who took inspiration from Veera Gunnamma would vehemently oppose such projects. “The government cannot acquire land on its own, as villagers are aware of the consequences of setting up such projects. Innocent people will also react like Veera Gunnamama when injustice is meted out to them,” Mr. Prakash said. Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists president Nalli Dharma Rao called on journalists to recall the services of freedom fighters like Veera Gunnamma who opposed the Zamindari system and police brutality in the 1940s.
