A tribal youth was killed when unidentified miscreants opened fire at him with a country-made gun in the Dandangi forest area of Devipatnam mandal in East Godavari district on Sunday. The victim was identified as Patti Posuratnam, 21, native of Dandangi, who was working as a local help to employees of the Forest Department.

The incident took place when Posiratnam was accompanying Varalakshmi, local guard, in search of the hunters in the Gokavaram forest range. They found the 10-member gang. Even as Ms. Varalakshmi opened a dialogue with the gang, one of them opened fire and Posiratnam sustained bullet wound in the stomach.

The gang then fled and Ms. Varalakshmi rushed Posiratnam to the government hospital in Rajamahendravaram. Doctors referred him to the Government General Hospital in Kakinada but Posiratnam succumbed to the injury when the ambulance was reaching Kakinada.
