The district administration is making elaborate arrangements for the Flamingo Festival, which will be held from January 2 to 4. The event has so far been a local affair, with people from nearby places such as Sullurupeta, Tada, Nayudupeta and Gudur turning up.
The administration has decided to take up several initiatives to attract tourists, both domestic and foreign, towards achieving the larger goal of developing the Pulicat lake and the Nelapattu bird sanctuary into major tourism hubs. It will also ensure the active involvement of officials, people’s representatives and NGOs to make the event a grand success.
The venue of the festival, as usual, will be the local high school at Sullurupeta, which is a popular lake town close to the Tamil Nadu border. It is also called the ‘rocket town’, as the Sriharikota space centre is close by. Special arrangements will be made for the convenience of tourists.
During her recent visit to Pulicat lake and Nelapattu sanctuary, District Collector M. Janaki had directed officials to identify and develop bird watching spots near the Pulikat lake.
Educational, cultural and rural sport events are also being planned. Departments like Animal Husbandry, Agriculture, Tourism, Social Welfare and Health will put up stalls at the venue.
Film stars will entertain the crowds on the last day of the festival.
