The Gangavaram Circle Police on Tuesday busted a 11-member fake police gang and a Karnataka police constable after waylaying them on the National Highway near Bangarupalem, 25 km from here, and seized two SUVs and Rs. 24 lakh from them.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Palamaner) Harinatha Reddy said a youth, Chandra of Gurramkonda mandal, had set up a gang with 10 others from Bangalore, Mulabhagal and other places on the Karnataka border.

Their modus operandi was to cheat gullible public by claiming that they would give two notes of Rs. 500 denomination printed in 2005 or before for each note printed after 2005, taking advantage of RBI norms. A Karnataka police constable, Papanna, who worked in Bangalore, also joined the gang.

On December 17 last year, a business man, Ashok Reddy of Bangalore, fell into their trap.
