More than a week after the southwest monsoon covered Andhra Pradesh, hot and dry spell is back to haunt the city. While there was scattered rainfall in parts of Visakhapatnam in the early hours of Friday, news from the weatherman was not very encouraging.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the dry spell is likely to continue in coastal Andhra Pradesh for the next two days before rainfall activity picks. The IMD forecast predicts rain or heavy rain at isolated places in coastal AP on June 25, 26 and 27.
Speaking to The Hindu , S.S.V.S. Ramakrishna of the Department of Meteorology and Oceanography, Andhra University, said the localised spells in north coastal AP was due to convection activity. “This results in short spells of rain concentrated at isolated places. A continuous sheet of rain is lacking. North coastal AP may experience deficit rainfall if this situation continues,” Prof. Ramakrishna said.
Monsoon played truant in the regions of Rayalaseema and north coastal AP with the places not receiving much rainfall so far.
According to experts, the structure of southwest monsoon is getting critically affected due to the atmospheric deep convection, also known as “mesoscale convective system,” a phenomenon that hinders uniform spread of rainfall.
