Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), with the assistance of local police, conducted raids on a fish packing unit in Krishna district on Wednesday night. The intelligence sleuths took two persons into custody.

According to official sources, DRI officials from Chennai and Hyderabad conducted surprise raids on a private packing company located at Gopavaram village in Krishna district around 9 p.m. on Wednesday. The search continued for about 12 hours.

On a tip-off that some locals were illegally importing heroin hidden in the ice boxes from the neighbouring States, the intelligence sleuths swooped on the company and searched the premises. The DRI officials brought two persons along with them during the raids. They took into custody a youth from Vijayawada and picked up another suspect from Kaikalur.

When contacted, Vijayawada City Police Commissioner B. Srinivasulu confirmed that the DRI sleuths conducted raids with the help of local police. “We just provided assistance to the intelligence officials in the searches and the details of the seizure were not known, ” Mr. Srinivasulu said.

“A 10-member DRI team conducted the raid and we assisted them in executing the operation. The searches ended around 9 a.m. today,” said a police officer of Krishna district.

Meanwhile, police continued its searches on various fish, prawn and crab processing and packing units and ice factories in Kaikalur, Kalidindi, Bantumilli, Kruthivennu, Mandavalli and other mandals on the borders of Krishna and West Godavari districts.
