Making an indirect reference to students committing suicide, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday cautioned parents against exerting undue pressure on children.

“On its part, the government is streamlining the education system by adopting best practices, and has taken up augmentation of infrastructure in government schools at a cost of nearly ₹5,000 crore. Students will have the best facilities to achieve their potential. An additional sum of ₹30 crore would be allocated to sponsor meritorious students and help them pursue higher studies in reputed institutions from next year,” he stated.

The Chief Minister was speaking after presenting the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Pratibha Awards to students who excelled in school and college, here on Sunday.

Mr. Naidu exhorted the students and their parents to transform the State into a knowledge economy.

Virtual classrooms

Priority had been given to virtual classrooms, he asserted.

Measures would be taken to help larger numbers of students from Andhra Pradesh enter top institutions such as IIT and IIM. He reiterated that the government was committed to teachers’ welfare, and had sanctioned funds towards fitment, including transfers, for which they would not have to approach political leaders or middlemen.

A selection panel examination would be conducted annually to fill vacanies in all districts, Mr. Naidu said.
