Communist Party of India functionaries staged a dharna at Kadapa Municipal Corporation office on Monday demanding the completion of Buggavanka stream beautification, the bridge at Ravindranagar, underground drainage system and provision of basic amenities in Kadapa town.
The civic officials listed 220 slum areas in Kadapa town where basic amenities such as drinking water supply, proper roads, drains and street lighting are improper, CPI district secretary G. Easwaraiah alleged. The narrow roads were dug up for laying the underground drainage system and trenches were not filled properly converting them into stagnant water pools, he lamented. Drinking water supply for about an hour every day is a luxury for people, he said.
The pipelines laid from Lingampalli water works on the outskirts break and leak frequently, affecting drinking water supply. Drinking water is being supplied at odd hours causing inconvenience to people, he alleged. Officials have no idea of when the Galeru Nagari canal will be completed. Meanwhile, private purified water centres are mushrooming and fleecing people, he added.
City planning officials are turning a blind eye to the encroachment of canals and some areas are becoming water-logged even with scanty rainfall, he said. He demanded the construction of community halls and parks in different areas, allocation of land for burial grounds, filing of cases on unauthorised layouts, mitigating medicine shortage in urban community health centres, sanction of pension to the aged, widows and physically-challenged persons and steps to improve sanitation.
