The Machavaram police on Sunday arrested a couple, Patnam Surendra Babu and Satri Anitha, who deceived an ayurvedic, doctor Naidu Ravi Varma, promising to arrange ₹2.80 crore loan at less interest.
Surendra Babu alias Satya Prasad, a native of Yerramukkapalli village in Kadapa district, was reportedly maintaining live-in relationship with Anitha alias Swathi Priya. He worked as field assistant in Suraksha Finance Company, at Kadapa, and cheated the public.
Misleading ad
The couple had given an advertisement in a Telugu daily in May last year, promising to arrange loans on subsidy from the State Finance Corporation at 80 paise interest. When the victim, Ravi Varma contacted the accused they said they had arranged ₹20 lakh loan to one Prasad.
The accused, Surendra Babu, impersonated as Prasad over phone and said that he got the loan on subsidy and Anitha introduced herself as Swathi Priya. Believing the couple, the doctor paid ₹ 45 lakh to the accused in instalments.
Central Zone Assistant Commissioner of Police N. Satyanandam said the accused had even sent a subsidy form to Ravi Varma and asked the latter to sign on it. Surendra Babu and Anitha collected ₹ 9 lakh from D. Venkataramana and D. Sajitha of Nellore in the same manner, said Machavaram Circle Inspector K. Umamaheswara Rao.
