There was some respite from severe cold on Sunday in Adilabad when the minimum temperature was pegged at 7 degree Celsius against the 4 degree Celsius of the previous three days. The cold however, was still tormenting and kept people indoors until the sun rose on the horizon.

Cold winds of low velocity continued to sweep the plains and the hilly areas, which contributed to the severity of the season. Normal life was more dislocated in the agency areas where people start working since early in the day.

Among other things, cold weather delayed inauguration of the State level kho-kho and kabaddi tournament at local stadium. The tourney got off to a start at 11 am instead of the scheduled 10 am.

Chill in Nizamabad

In Nizamabad to beat the chilled weather people particularly living in slums, and passengers going by trains and lorry and autorikshaw drivers are seen sitting around fires since early mornings.

An unprecedented low temperature of 5 Degree Celsius was recorded in the district on Sunday which is considered the lowest in the current season. Unlike their wont walkers who used to take to the grounds early morning are coming only after sun rise. The Ayyappaswamis who take cold water baths in the wee hours too are suffering from the cold waves.

Medak recorded 9 degree Celsius for the second consecutive day forcing people to stay indoors. Roads wore a deserted look at many places except for people venturing out to attend functions. The officials warned not to venture out in early morning or late evening without proper covering for head.

Biting cold

A report from Warangal said people were questioning can the cold be so biting. The temperature was lowest ever and many opine that they did not witness so much cold in the past one decade here. The otherwise busy Public Gardens, JN staium, Arts college and KU campus are now thin with morning walkers as many are not daring to venture out in the chilling cold wave. The thick fog enveloping the tri-cities of Warangal, Hanamkonda and Kazipet has been too discouraging for the morning walkers. “We cannot see sunrise even at 8.30 am. Not many people are coming for morning walk at Public Gardens,” said K Damodar Rao, associate professor of English.

He said this was new experience as people here are used to the hot wave and extreme summer. Pediatrician Dr M Seshu Madhav said he had not witnessed the so cold in the past one decade.

“The night temperature seems to around 8 to 9 degrees which is new experience of us here,” he said. Mr Seshu Madhav said the children are most vulnerable to the cold wave as he was witnessing children coming with complaints of cold injuries and pneumonia.
