Keeping in view the increasing requirement of drinking water this summer, the Nellore Municipal Corporation is taking advanced steps to ensure water supply in all the areas in the city.

As part of this, the municipal corporation officials have estimated that the summer demand may slightly increase over and above the current demand of 80 million litres per day (MLD).

In several areas, where facilities of water supply though pipeline are not available, efforts are being made to supply drinking water through water tankers. However, officials say that there has never been a major drinking water crisis in the city so far.

Still, in an attempt to avoid problems in future, the municipal corporation has proposed to lay pipelines in the uncovered areas which included Chandrababu Nagar, Parameswarinagar, Janardhana Reddynagar and so on. There works will be undertaken at a cost of Rs. 1.2 crore shortly.

“All steps are being taken to ensure potable drinking water supply to all residents this summer. The quality of the water will also be closely monitored this time and this will be done by sampling of tap water,” said Mayor Abdul Aziz.

Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Aziz said that a fund of Rs. 120 crore had been spent on the summer storage tank at Kothur on the city outskirts in the past, but the tank was proved to be of no use to augment the drinking water supply till now.

Plans were being made to put this tank to full use by taking corrective steps soon, he added.

Mr. Aziz further said that a special officer would be appointed to oversee that all aspects were covered in the improvement works to be undertaken at the summer storage tank, which was equipped with facility for purification of the water and its periodical testing.

Water is being pumped to the SST from the Somasila reservoir and this water is getting polluted by the time it reaches the tank.

The officials has been asked to draw plans to address this issue as well.
