The city of Visakhapatnam will host the second World Congress on Disaster Management from November 19 to 22.
Delegates, stakeholders and policy makers from over 100 countries are likely to participate in the four-day event, which is being jointly hosted by the Andhra Pradesh Government and Disaster Management, Infrastructure and Control Society (DMICS).
At a meeting convened here by the DMICS officials and district authorities, which was co-chaired by Deputy Chief Minister N. China Rajappa and HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao, it was decided that Andhra University would be one of the venues for the congress.
Addressing the media after the steering committee meeting, Mr. China Rajappa said that it was the first meeting and many things were yet to be decided.
“It is estimated that about 1,500 delegates and policy makers from about 100 countries are likely to participate. And the estimated budget is going to be about Rs. 5 crore,” he said.
The four-day meet will comprise technical sessions, exhibitions, paper presentations and cultural events.
Talking to The Hindu , P.G. Dhar Chakravarthy, former secretary (Disaster Management), Government of India, said that various issues such as disaster caused by natural and man-made hazards, disaster vulnerabilities, application of science and technology in disaster management and disaster response and recovery, would be focused upon.
The first congress was held at Hyderabad in 2008 and was inaugurated by the then President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
“We are trying to invite President Pranab Mukherjee or Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the inaugural event,” said Mr. Chakravarthy. “The outcome of the congress will be presented to the government as recommendations,” said Mr. Anand Babu of DMICS.
District Collector N. Yuvaraj said that the Visakha Utsav committee could be utilised as organising committee for the congress.

Mr. J.C. Sarma informed the media that the brochure of the congress was released by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday at Hyderabad.
