Taking a cue from their counterparts at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu, officials of the Fisheries Department in East Godavari district are soon going to launch check-post for the boats that are venturing into the sea for fishing. Online counters will be arranged at seven points including the Fishing Harbour, Kumbhabhishekam, Uppada, Matlapalem, Bhairavapalem, Odalarevu and Antarvedi to issue tokens to the boats before their departure into the Bay of Bengal.

Details including the boat number, name and telephone number of the boat owner and the number of fishermen on the board and expected date of return will be registered online before issuing the token.

After reaching the shore, the fishermen should return the token at the counter without fail, before leaving for their hamlets.

“This system will help us know the status of fishing in the sea like the number of boats and fishermen from the district are in the sea. This data will come in handy during exigencies such as sudden cyclones,” says T. Kalyanam, Deputy Director of Fisheries Department.

At Tuticorin, the Fisheries Department arranged a check-post to regulate the number of boats venturing into the sea for fishing at the given point of time to address the challenge of an increased number of boats in the vicinity.

“Here the purpose is quite different. We are facing the challenge of collecting the detail of fishermen in distress during the times of cyclones. This system will help us a lot in many ways, as we can build a data bank over a period of time,” explains Mr. Kalyanam.
