With the Central Bureau of Investigation filing three more charge sheets in a special court here on Tuesday in the quid pro quo investment cases against Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, the Kadapa MP may have to wait for some more days to come out of jail on bail.
The CBI action comes two days after the expiry of a four-month deadline fixed by the Supreme Court to complete the probe into all pending aspects. The court had on May 9 rejected Mr. Reddy’s bail plea.
The MP has been in jail since May 27 last year, after arrest on charges of misusing his father, the late Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s position as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh for quid pro quo investments in his companies.
Now the CBI filed separate charge sheets on the Penna Cements, Raghuram (Bharathi) Cements and India Cements aspects of quid pro quo investments. The documents on charges were submitted to the Second Additional Special Court for CBI Cases in a sealed cover by investigating officer H. Venkatesh.
But the charge sheets did not include the names of at least a couple of Ministers, who were associated with the issuance of government orders related to the three companies and were recently examined by the agency.
Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy and his financial adviser V. Vijay Sai Reddy figured as the first two accused in the three charge sheets. Others named therein included India Cements managing director N. Srinivasan, IAS officers M. Samuel and Aditya Nath Das, and the former Principal Secretary (Industries) B. Krupanandam.
Mr. Srinivasan was examined by the CBI for two days in June last year. The CBI, in its remand report after arresting Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy, mentioned that India Cements had invested over Rs. 140 crore in Jagan’s group companies in return for obtaining a mining lease in Kadapa district renewed for 25 years, till 2028, and getting water allotment for its cement units in Nalgonda and Ranga Reddy districts.
The former Ministers Mopidevi Venkataramana, Dharmana Prasada Rao and P. Sabitha Indra Reddy figured in earlier charge sheets for their role in the issuance of the GOs related to the quid pro quo case. With the filing of fresh charge sheets, the total number has risen to eight apart from several supplementary charge sheets. Now only three more aspects are left — Lepakshi Knowledge Hub, Sandur Power and Kolkata-based companies — in which probe is pending.
