A woman from Pithapuram, who has been suffering from cancer, has sought permission from the East Godavari District Collector Karthikeya Misra for passive euthanasia on the grounds of unbearable pain. She made this representation to the Collector through her husband P. Kondababu during “Mee Kosam” grievances day here on Monday.

Responding to her request, the Collector directed Dr. V. Varaprasad, District Coordinator, NTR Vaidya Seva, to take immediate steps for further treatment to her through the NTR Vaidya Seva Trust or as requested by her husband for better treatment in Hyderabad. Dr. Varaprasad said that she would be referred to experts in Hope International in Kakinada and based on their advice further action would be taken. Later, Mr. Misra said that he would write to the Chief Minister’s Office seeking sanction of full amount for surgery.

In her representation, Patthi Ramalakshmi, 38, mentioned that doctors of a super speciality hospital in Hyderabad had made the diagnosed her with cancer of the cervix in 2016 and estimated that surgery would cost ₹4.50 lakh. When she contacted the then Collector to get assistance from the CM relief fund, the CM sanctioned ₹1.01 lakh. However, she could not undergo surgery as she could not arrange the remaining amount. As her suffering increased, she sought permission for passive euthanasia and offered to donate her organs to the needy.
