VISAKHAPATNAM : From spending long hours playing Temple Run, Candy Crush and Subway Surfers to developing new games, it was an exciting experience for those who took part in the first-of-its-kind mobile app developing boot camp presented here recently by Girls Code Camp and Andhra Pradesh Summer Fellows.

Pairing up with new friends and creating an application using a set of codes aided in boosting the confidence level of girls who realised that technology was one of the emerging fields that can be explored. They said the process of coding is quite challenging.

“However, it is not tough to learn. Based on the digital presentation and block programming, we are able to design a couple of games such as ‘Save Dave’ and ‘Brick Breaker’,” said G. Mounika, Class X student of Andhra University English Medium School, who tried her hand at coding.

Based on the techniques used to design games, the participants said they can create a new application with their own set of codes. “Coding is an interesting process and once you are into the subject, it drives you to discover something new. After picking up the basic concepts, we can create multiple games experimenting with a combination of codes,” said S. Aishwarya, Class IX student of Sri Prakash Vidyaniketan.

The toughest part in developing an app for some appeared to be creating a scoreboard.

“Even if we miss a single sequence, it is difficult to get the scores back. So we need to pay extra attention while developing scoreboard and get the codes right in the first place,” said Gayathri and Tulasi, participants who teamed up to design games.

The GCC members said the camp turned out to be instrumental in brining enthusiastic girls together and providing them a common platform to experiment with their coding skills. The team plans to build in-house volunteers as part of its expansion plans so that the training continues for the rest of the year, encouraging a number of girls to venture into the domain.
