The spiralling price of onion has put consumers in a quandary. The Andhra Pradesh government is considering importing them to improve availability in the domestic market.

With the onions being sold upwards of Rs. 40/kg in many areas, Chief Secretary I. Y. R. Krishna Rao held a meeting with the officials of Civil Supplies and Agriculture Marketing departments on Saturday.

The officials said that 939 tonnes of subsidised onions were being supplied through Rythu Bazaars to keep the prices of onions under check.

The Chief Secretary directed the officials to prepare an action plan to look at the possibility of importing onions from neighbouring States as a safeguard in case of crop failure due to bad weather.
