Health workers and school faculty had a difficult time administering Measles-Rubella vaccine to children in elementary, primary and high schools in the city on Tuesday.
School teachers had a tough time getting children to take the injection. The children, who did not know that the vaccination was an injection, began crying on seeing syringes in the hands of the paramedics.
City based-paediatrician Y. Sandhya said the injection, which was “subcutaneous,” was not so painful but many of the children were afraid of taking the injection .
The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation planned to cover children in 477 schools in the city in 1,529 sessions. The authorities have planned 906 sessions in schools and 570 outreach sessions.
Meet with paediatricians
The medical and health officials held meeting with paediatricians in the city and asked them to counsel the parents to get their wards vaccinated. The paediatricians were told that there was no problem even if the children were recently vaccinated for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR).
Some schools asked parents to sign undertakings absolving the managements of any reaction.
