Andhra Pradesh government would enact a special law to curb video piracy that was spelling doom for the Telugu film industry.
Reacting to a special mention on video piracy made by actor-turned-MLA K. Chiranjeevi in the Assembly on Tuesday, Chief Minister K. Rosaiah said, “We are at it. We will do the best (to curb video piracy).”
He said the government was working on an amendment to the existing law to incorporate stringent provisions to tackle the piracy menace.
“We have no objection even to enact a special legislation in this regard. We are one with the film industry and would like the industry to grow. We will support it fully,” the Chief Minister added.
Earlier Mr. Chiranjeevi said the Telugu film industry is in intensive care unit and asked the government to give it some oxygen to bring it back to life. He said mere assurances would not do and the government should turn its words into concrete action.
Leader of the House and Minister for Cinematography J. Geeta Reddy said the State government would send a team of officials to Tamil Nadu soon to study the anti-piracy law in force there. “We will follow the suggestions of the film industry and take required steps to check this menace. We will soon set up an exclusive anti-piracy wing for which the modalities are being worked out,” she added.
